I think you are right, many of us are chained to fashion and looks. We have to ask ourselves how in the world can we achieve the perfect figure and the especially smooth skin of a mannequin who doesn't smile or frown and who doesn't eat? But alas, they truly miss out on the joys of life and they cannot free themselves from their chains.

Ever since my mother passed in February, I've been using a new approach to being with my friends and family. I choose to experience each encounter as a 'this could be it' moment. It's really changed the way I am with people, and maybe even the way they are with me. It's not that the moment in any way is more urgent, but that it's potential importance is with me in the moment. I'm more accepting now.

They say life is short, and in the sense that the older I get the more it flies by, that makes sense. But because life keeps going, day after day, week after week, I think it's easy for people to fall into the idea that there will always be more. As we're learning from our losses, it just ain't so.

Thanks, Rick, for sharing your story and moments of self discovery.

Just lost my mother unexpectedly. We had a video call with her 6 month old grandson a week before she passed. Felt the same way about that call that you did about those receipts. Thanks for the article.

Hi Dr. Brinkman. I heard your mother's story when I came to the one day seminar this week. I was deeply touched by it and as a son of a survivor, who lost his entire family, I can relate.

I was also very inspired by your seminar and I am sure it will help me in my work relationship as well as in my personal relationship. Thanks.. Moshe

"It would appear, Mr. Spock, that we've found ourselves on an insane world." Kirk to Spock.

Your father was wonderful, and I'm glad to have known him, laughed with him, and watched him, though briefly, make his way on this crazy planet.
